Does Diesel Go Bad? How Long Standby Generator Fuel Really Lasts

Yes, diesel goes bad. Untreated diesel in a typical standby tank is often good for roughly six to twelve months before quality starts to slip, and much less if water, heat or biodiesel blends are involved. With good housekeeping, testing and treatment, you can keep fuel usable for years.

The stakes are simple: a standby generator is only as reliable as the fuel in its tank. Degraded fuel blocks filters, damages injectors and can stop your set minutes into an outage, exactly when your site is depending on it.

Fuel Care Is Part of Generator Service

USP&E services diesel generator fleets for industrial, mining and critical sites, and fuel problems are among the most common causes of failed starts and early shutdowns we investigate. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers can sample, test and polish your fuel as part of a planned maintenance schedule. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

What Makes Diesel Go Bad

Diesel degrades in three main ways. Oxidation forms gums and sediment as the fuel ages, especially when tanks run warm. Water gets in through condensation, vents and deliveries, settles at the bottom and gives microbes a place to grow. Those microbes, often called diesel bug, produce sludge and acids that block filters and corrode tanks.

Biodiesel blends speed this up. Even a few percent of biodiesel attracts more water and oxidises faster than straight petroleum diesel, which is why many standby specifications now ask for low or no biodiesel content in long-term storage.

How Long Can Diesel Be Stored?

There is no single expiry date, because storage conditions decide the outcome. Cool, sealed, regularly drained tanks keep fuel far longer than hot, vented tanks with water at the bottom. The table below gives practical planning ranges, not guarantees; testing is what tells you the truth about your own tank.

Fuel use matters too. A standby set that runs only for monthly tests may take years to turn over a full tank. Knowing your real burn rate helps you size tanks sensibly; the USP&E diesel generator fuel consumption chart shows typical litres per hour by load, so you can match stored volume to how fast you actually use it.

Storage condition Practical planning range What to do
Untreated, warm, vented tank Roughly 6 to 12 months Test often, plan turnover
Treated, cool, sealed, drained Often 1 to several years Test at least twice a year
Biodiesel blend in storage Shorter than straight diesel Avoid for long-term standby
Water present at tank bottom Degrades quickly Drain, polish, treat now

Fuel Testing and Polishing

Sample from the bottom of the tank, not just the top, because that is where water and sludge collect. A useful test covers water and sediment, microbial contamination, appearance and particle count, compared against the fuel standard that applies where you operate, such as ASTM D975 in the US or EN 590 in Europe.

Fuel polishing circulates the tank through filters and water separators to remove contamination before it reaches the engine. Done on a schedule, it extends fuel life and protects injectors. Pair it with a biocide where microbes are confirmed, a stabiliser for long storage, and regular water draining. See the fuel burn and storage guidance for planning stored volume.

Fuel Readiness for Bigger Plants

Fuel discipline matters even more as sites grow. Many backup fleets now support gas turbine generators and natural gas engines/stations running base load, with diesel kept for black start. Whether you run used/new gas turbines, a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, or plan for the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA with 2028–2030 slots, the diesel tank still decides whether your plant can restart. USP&E builds that into hyperscale EPC/O&M for AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute.

For storage at larger diesel plants, see this independent guide to fuel storage at diesel power stations. For the full service scope, this site’s diesel generator service pillar explains how fuel care fits into planned maintenance.

Where USP&E Has Delivered Before

These approved projects show USP&E keeping diesel and turbine fleets ready to run on remote and critical sites.

  • USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania.
  • NEOM, Saudi Arabia: USP&E supplied zero-hour Siemens SGT-400 gas turbines and acted as the single technical and commercial interface. Read the case study.
  • Resolute Mining, Syama, Mali: USP&E supplied, installed and operated a Caterpillar power station for the process plant and process water. Read the case study.

How to Keep Stored Diesel Usable

Your 3-step plan: 1. Book a bottom sample and fuel test. 2. Polish and treat if results call for it. 3. Set a testing and turnover schedule.

  1. Drain water from the tank bottom and record the volume removed.
  2. Take a bottom sample and test for water, sediment and microbes.
  3. Polish the fuel through filtration and water separation if needed.
  4. Add stabiliser or biocide only where test results justify it.
  5. Repeat testing at least twice a year and plan fuel turnover.

FAQ: Does Diesel Go Bad?

Which USP&E offices provide fuel testing and polishing?

USP&E schedules fuel sampling and polishing from Johannesburg and Cape Town for African sites, with Colorado Springs and Knoxville covering US clients. London supports service contracts and finance, and Wuxi helps source filtration equipment. Results come back against the fuel standard that applies on your site.

Has USP&E delivered generator service programmes before?

Yes, USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and runs maintenance programmes for diesel and turbine fleets. The track record above lists approved examples, including a containerised genset fleet for a Tanzanian gold project.

Is USP&E a fuel broker or generator broker?

No, USP&E is not a broker of fuel or equipment. We are a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that services, tests and maintains the generators and fuel systems on your site, and we stay accountable for whether your standby power starts when it is needed.

How quickly can USP&E respond to a fuel problem?

USP&E normally responds within one working day and can prioritise sites with failed starts or blocked filters. Send the tank size, fuel age, recent test results and any symptoms. We will tell you whether you need sampling, polishing or a full tank clean, and how soon.

How long is diesel good for in a generator tank?

USP&E uses roughly six to twelve months as a planning range for untreated diesel in a typical standby tank. Cool, sealed tanks with water drained, regular testing and treatment can keep fuel usable for years. Only a fuel test tells you the real condition of your own tank.

How can I tell if diesel has gone bad?

USP&E looks for dark or cloudy fuel, sediment, a slimy layer at the water interface, blocked filters and rough running. The reliable answer comes from a bottom sample tested for water, sediment, microbes and particle count, compared against the fuel standard that applies where you operate.

Does fuel polishing make old diesel like new?

USP&E uses polishing to remove water, sediment and microbial sludge, which restores most contaminated fuel to usable condition. It cannot reverse heavy oxidation, so badly aged fuel may still need replacing. Regular polishing combined with testing is cheaper than replacing a tank of fuel.

Should I avoid biodiesel blends in standby tanks?

USP&E generally advises low or no biodiesel content for long-term standby storage. Biodiesel attracts more water and oxidises faster than straight diesel, which shortens storage life and encourages microbial growth. If blends are unavoidable, test more often and turn the fuel over faster.

Make Sure Your Fuel Is Ready

With tested, clean fuel, your standby generator starts and runs through the outage. With neglected fuel, it stalls when your site needs it most. Book a fuel check before the next outage tests it for you.
