If an overspeed trip fails, an engine can destroy itself. If a low oil pressure shutdown is bypassed or broken, a bearing failure becomes a crankshaft failure. An untested trip is a hidden risk to your equipment, your people and your power supply.
USP&E Helps You Test Diesel Protection Trips and Carry Them Into GT
We understand that testing trips takes running time, permits and careful planning, and that busy sites are tempted to skip it. With 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, USP&E puts 400+ engineers and project managers behind you; they set up and run trip testing routines on diesel fleets and carry the same discipline into gas turbine protection. You get ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified quality and safety systems, with FCPA and OFAC compliance on every contract. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
The aim is simple: every shutdown on every unit has a test method, a schedule and a record showing it worked the last time it was tested.
List Every Shutdown and Write a Test Method
Start with a list for each unit. Include engine shutdowns such as overspeed, low oil pressure, high coolant temperature, low coolant level and emergency stop, plus electrical protection such as reverse power, overcurrent and loss of excitation. Use the control and protection drawings, not memory.
Write a test method for each item. It should say how the trip is triggered safely, whether the engine runs or stays stopped, what result is expected and how fast it should happen. Where you simulate a signal, make sure the test proves the whole chain from sensor to shutdown.
Agree the schedule from the maintenance manual, your insurer and local rules. Some trips are tested at every service, others at major outages, and relay testing usually needs a specialist with secondary injection equipment.
Test Under a Permit and Record What Happened
Run every test under a permit to work with a clear isolation plan. Tell operators what is being tested and what they will see. Testing protection on a running engine carries risk, so the method and the people must both be ready.
Record the actual result, not a tick. Note whether the trip operated, how long it took and any alarms that came with it. A slow or partial trip is a failure, even if the engine stopped in the end.
Fix failed trips before the unit returns to service. Look for bypasses and jumpers left from earlier work, and remove them. A temporary override that stays in place is one of the most common causes of serious engine damage.
Add Gas Turbine Trips to the Same Routine
When gas turbine generators join the fleet, add their protection to the same schedule: overspeed, flame loss, high exhaust temperature, high vibration, low lube oil pressure, fire and gas detection and fuel gas shutoff valves. Turbine suppliers set specific test methods and intervals, and your routine should follow them.
Bridge units need the same care. A remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used/new gas turbines or natural gas engines/stations brought in as cover must have their trips proven before they carry critical load.
Compute campuses depend on this discipline at scale. Under hyperscale EPC/O&M, every block of AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute has a trip test schedule and records tied to its permit system, and each New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA is handed over with tested protection and a routine your crews can repeat.
USP&E Teams Behind Your Diesel Service Site
Remote sites need people who know frontier work. USP&E runs your diesel spares and GT O&M transition from Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineers plan mobilisation, spares and site supervision for projects far from the nearest service shop.
Further back in the chain, London (162-168 Regent Street) handles financing and contract structure for critical spares, CMMS stores and gas turbine O&M kits; Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) secure US equipment, parts and engineering support; and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) keeps Chinese-made switchgear and balance-of-plant moving.
For diesel and turbine trip testing, Johannesburg and Cape Town O&M engineers can review your protection drawings and test records, then witness trip tests on site with your crew under your permit system. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. That team has carried 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.
USP&E Track Record for Diesel Service
You want proof that USP&E has run and recovered large engine fleets where protection and availability both mattered. These projects show that record.
- USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania.
- London Mining, Marampa, Sierra Leone: USP&E engineered, supplied and commissioned a 16 MW HFO power station in five months, two months ahead of schedule and on budget. Read the case study.
- Mining O&M recovery, Mali: USP&E took over a 100+ MW plant of 15 Cat CM32 engines left in critical condition, restored availability to about 95% and cut maintenance and repair cost per engine by 66%. Read the case study.
HowTo: Test Diesel Protection Trips and Carry Them into GT
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share protection drawings, trip lists and test records under NDA. 2. Receive a trip register, test methods and schedule. 3. Test, fix and record every trip under accountable O&M.
- List every shutdown and alarm on each unit: overspeed, oil pressure, coolant temperature, emergency stop and electrical trips.
- Write a test method for each one with the expected result.
- Test trips on a fixed schedule under a permit, and record what actually happened.
- Fix failed or slow trips before the unit returns to service.
- Add gas turbine generators trips such as overspeed, flame loss, vibration and fire to the same schedule.
- Review trip test records every quarter and close every gap.

FAQ: Diesel O&M Protection Trip Tests to GT
Which diesel shutdowns should be tested regularly?
USP&E tests overspeed, low oil pressure, high coolant temperature, low coolant level, emergency stop and electrical protection such as reverse power and overcurrent. Your exact list comes from the control and protection drawings for each unit, so every trip fitted to the engine is covered.
How often should protection trips be tested?
USP&E sets intervals from the maintenance manual, your insurer’s requirements and local rules. Some trips are tested at every service, others at major outages, and relay testing usually needs secondary injection. The key is a written schedule that your team actually follows and records.
Is simulating a signal a valid trip test?
USP&E accepts simulated signals only when the test proves the whole chain from sensor to shutdown. Testing a relay output alone may miss a failed sensor or broken wire. Your test method should state exactly what each test proves and what it does not.
What should you do about bypasses and overrides?
USP&E treats every bypass as a risk to be controlled. You record each override with a reason, an approval and an end date, and remove it before the unit returns to normal service. Forgotten jumpers left after maintenance are a common cause of serious engine damage.
Where are USP&E’s offices that support O&M testing?
USP&E supports diesel O&M from Johannesburg and Cape Town, where engineers can witness trip tests and review records on African sites. London handles contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville support US turbine supply and engineering, and Wuxi follows up China-made switchgear and parts.
Has USP&E delivered O&M on large engine fleets before?
USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies also cover Resolute’s Syama mine in Mali, where USP&E supplied, installed and operated a Caterpillar power station. You can read each case study yourself.
Is USP&E a broker for O&M services?
USP&E is not a broker and does not resell outside service crews. USP&E runs O&M with its own engineers and technicians, so the people who test your protection trips are the same people who answer for availability and safety on your site.
How fast can USP&E respond to a trip testing request?
USP&E can start reviewing your protection drawings, trip lists and past test records as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag untested trips, bypasses and missing methods first, then plan site testing around your outage windows and permit system.
Know Your Trips Will Work When It Counts
Test your protection on schedule and every shutdown works when a fault arrives. Skip it and the first failed trip can cost you an engine. USP&E will help you list, test and record every trip with confidence.
