Diesel O&M Operator Rounds to GT
Your operators walk the diesel plant every shift. When that round is done well, they catch a weeping hose, a hot bearing or a falling oil level long before an alarm. When it becomes a tick-box exercise, small problems grow until they trip a unit.
Adding gas turbines raises the stakes. A missed fuel gas leak, a blocked inlet filter or a lube oil drift on a turbine can lead to a trip, a fire risk or a costly repair, and you carry that risk until rounds cover the new plant properly.
USP&E Helps You Carry Operator Rounds Into GT
We know good rounds are the cheapest reliability tool your plant has, and also the easiest to let slip. With 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, USP&E puts 400+ engineers and project managers behind you; they design round sheets, train operators and turn round data into trends on plants where diesels and turbines run side by side. You get ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified quality and safety systems, with FCPA and OFAC compliance on every contract. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
A round should tell you something you did not know at the start of the shift. If it does not, the sheet or the habit needs to change.
Write One Round Sheet Per Unit
Each unit needs a round sheet with the readings, limits and visual checks that matter: oil pressure and level, coolant temperature, fuel leaks, exhaust condition, battery state, enclosure doors and housekeeping. Keep it short enough to complete properly.
Record readings, not ticks. A tick says the operator looked; a number lets you see a drift. Print the normal range next to each reading so the operator knows when to report.
Fix round times and routes. Walking the same route at the same times makes readings comparable and helps new operators learn the plant. Give each new operator a walked handover of the route with an experienced colleague, so they learn what normal sounds, smells and looks like before recording alone.
Trend Round Data Every Week
Round data is only useful if someone looks at it. Enter readings into a spreadsheet or the CMMS, and review trends weekly with the shift leaders.
Look for slow changes: oil consumption creeping up, a bearing running a few degrees warmer each week, a pressure that drops a little more after each start. These are the faults that alarms miss until they are serious. If you only read alarms, you will always be late.
Turn every finding into a work order with a named person and a due date. Rounds lose credibility fast if operators report problems that never get fixed.
Add Turbine Checks and Keep One Schedule
Your gas turbine generators need their own checks on the same rounds: enclosure condition and ventilation, lube oil level and temperature, fuel gas skid and leak detectors, inlet filter differential pressure, vibration readouts and any unusual noise or smell.
Keep natural gas engines/stations, a remanufactured GE Frame 6B or verified used/new gas turbines on the same round schedule, so every machine on site gets the same attention.
Round discipline is the base of every serious O&M contract. In hyperscale EPC/O&M, AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute are walked and trended to the same rhythm, and plants running the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA rely on operators who record numbers, not ticks.

FAQ: Diesel O&M Operator Rounds to GT
Why do operator rounds matter on a diesel plant?
USP&E sees rounds catch leaks, hot bearings and falling levels before alarms do. Your operators are the plant’s best early warning when they record real readings on every shift. Rounds that become tick-box exercises let small faults grow into trips and repairs.
What should a good round sheet include?
USP&E keeps round sheets short and specific: key readings with normal ranges, leak and condition checks, enclosure and housekeeping notes. Your operators record numbers rather than ticks, so drifts show up in weekly trends instead of waiting for an alarm.
What turbine checks should be added to rounds?
USP&E adds enclosure and ventilation checks, lube oil level and temperature, fuel gas skid and detector status, inlet filter differential pressure and vibration readouts. Your operators also note unusual noise or smell, which often comes before any alarm on a turbine.
How should round findings be followed up?
USP&E turns every round finding into a work order with a named person and a due date, and reviews trends weekly with shift leaders. Your operators keep reporting when they see problems fixed. Ignored findings quickly kill the value of rounds.
Where are USP&E’s offices that support O&M service?
USP&E supports diesel and turbine O&M from Johannesburg and Cape Town, closest to your shift teams. London covers contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville add turbine engineering, and Wuxi supports China parts and manufacturing. One project file links them all.
Has USP&E delivered O&M on plants like yours?
USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies also cover Resolute’s Syama mine, where USP&E supplied, installed and operated a Caterpillar power station. You can read each case study yourself.
Is USP&E a broker for service contracts?
USP&E is not a broker and does not subcontract your O&M to unknown crews. USP&E engineers, builds and operates plants with its own people, so the supervisors who coach your rounds also answer to you for the availability your plant achieves.
How fast can USP&E respond to a rounds review?
USP&E can start reviewing your round sheets, logs and recent trip reports as soon as you share them under NDA. Supervisors flag missing checks and tick-box habits first, then plan shift visits, with timing set by site access and rosters.
Make Every Round Catch Something Early
Get rounds right and small faults are fixed before they trip a unit. Get them wrong and the first sign is a leak, a hot bearing or an outage nobody saw coming. USP&E will help you design, walk and trend your rounds with confidence.
