Diesel O&M Spill Containment Path to GT

Your diesel plant handles fuel, lube oil and coolant every day: deliveries, transfers, filter changes and drains. Each one is a chance for a spill. Most are small, but a cracked bund, a blocked drain or a missing drip tray can turn a small leak into contaminated ground and water.

If spill containment fails, you face clean-up costs, regulator attention, community complaints and sometimes a forced shutdown while the site is investigated. Fuel lost to the ground is also fuel you paid for. And the risk grows when gas turbine generators add their own lube oil, fuel and water wash drains to your site.

USP&E Helps You Keep Every Drop Where It Belongs

We understand that environmental incidents damage trust as well as ground. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers run diesel and gas turbine plants with containment, inspection and reporting built into daily O&M. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

You do not need a new plant to fix containment. You need a clear survey, simple routines your operators follow every shift and honest reporting of every spill and near miss.

Survey Every Store, Transfer Point and Drain

Walk your site and list every fuel, oil and coolant store, every transfer point and every drain. Include day tanks, bulk tanks, drum stores, filter change areas, workshop floors and the delivery bay where tankers unload. Many spills happen during deliveries and maintenance, not from tanks themselves.

Check each bund for capacity, cracks and open drain valves. Check drip trays under engines, pumps and filters for size and condition. Check oily water separators for blocked inlets, full chambers and missing maintenance records. Photograph what you find.

Compare your site with the rules that apply to it. Fuel storage, waste oil and discharge limits are set by local law and often by your lenders or customers. Our guide to diesel generator emission standards covers the air side; containment covers the ground and water side.

Build Containment into Daily O&M

Place spill kits at every risk point, sized for the largest likely spill there, and train every operator and contractor to use them. Add containment checks to your operator rounds: bund valves closed, trays empty, separators working, no stains on the ground.

Record every spill and near miss, however small, with the cause and the fix. Small leaks are early warnings. A pattern of drips at one filter housing points to a gasket or procedure problem that will one day cause a bigger spill.

Track fuel losses too. A gap between deliveries, tank dips and the fuel your engines burn can reveal a leak long before you see it on the ground. The figures in our diesel fuel consumption chart help you judge whether burn rates look right for your load.

Design Containment for Gas Turbines Before They Arrive

Gas turbine generators bring new containment needs: lube oil reservoirs and coolers, fuel skids, water wash drains that carry detergent and dirt, and transformer oil. Design bunds, drains and separators for them before the equipment arrives, not after the first wash.

Plan the drains so oily water, wash water and clean stormwater stay apart. Mixing them overloads separators and turns clean water into waste. Add the new systems to your rounds, spill kits and reports from the first day of commissioning, and fold them into one O&M programme.

The same discipline applies whatever you add next: a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, used/new gas turbines, natural gas engines/stations, or the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA. It matters in hyperscale EPC/O&M too, where AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute run beside sensitive neighbours. Global Offices Behind Your Diesel Service Programme

Your plant does not run on head-office time. USP&E anchors your diesel spares and GT O&M transition in Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineering, project controls and commissioning support sit, close to the African sites USP&E has powered for years.

When critical spares, CMMS stores and gas turbine O&M kits must be financed, sourced or shipped, London (162-168 Regent Street) structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) supports China supply chain and manufacturing.

For spill containment, Johannesburg and Cape Town O&M teams can survey your stores and drains, train your operators and design containment for new gas turbine plant before it arrives. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. One accountable team behind 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.

FAQ: Diesel O&M Spill Containment Path to GT

Where do most spills happen on a diesel plant?

USP&E finds most spills happen during fuel deliveries, transfers, filter changes and maintenance, rather than from tanks failing. Open bund valves, missing drip trays and blocked drains turn those small events into larger incidents. Good routines at those moments prevent most problems.

How often should bunds and separators be inspected?

USP&E includes bund valves, drip trays and separators in routine operator rounds, with a fuller inspection on a fixed schedule set by local rules and site risk. Inspections should also follow heavy rain, deliveries with problems or any spill, because those events reveal weaknesses.

What should a spill kit contain?

USP&E sizes spill kits for the largest likely spill at each location. Kits usually contain absorbent pads and booms, drain covers, protective gloves and goggles, and bags for waste. Operators must know where kits are and how to use them, so training matters as much as supplies.

Do gas turbines need different containment?

USP&E designs gas turbine containment for lube oil systems, fuel skids, transformer oil and water wash drains. Wash water carries detergent and dirt, so it often needs its own collection. Designing these systems before installation avoids costly changes after commissioning.

Where are USP&E’s offices for O&M support?

USP&E supports diesel O&M from Johannesburg and Cape Town, with teams that can reach plants across Africa. London structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville support US gas turbine supply and engineering, and Wuxi follows up equipment made in China.

Has USP&E delivered O&M on power plants before?

USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies also include Resolute’s Syama station in Mali, which USP&E operated, and a 16 MW HFO station at Marampa in Sierra Leone.

Is USP&E a broker for O&M services?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E runs O&M with its own engineers and technicians, so the team that surveys your containment and trains your operators is the same team that carries out the fixes and reports the results every month.

How fast can USP&E respond to a containment review?

USP&E can review your site layout, storage list and spill records as soon as you share them. Engineers flag the highest risks first, such as open bund valves or full separators, so you can act before the next delivery or storm.

Keep Fuel and Oil Out of the Ground

Run containment well and your plant stays clean, compliant and trusted by neighbours. Let it slip and one spill can bring clean-up costs, regulators and a forced shutdown. USP&E will help you survey, fix and report with confidence.
